The film ... rant

How Dare they cut Yané out of the scene!!!!!

Here is the plain and simple fact...if you want to see Yané (or the other handmaidens for that matter), DO NOT buy Pan&Scan. Besides with Pan&Scan you miss HALF the movie! So why would you want Pan&Scan anyway! I saw a Pan&Scan version of TPM at a showing at my college, so I know first hand the... Horrors of Pan and Scan!!!

Remember: Embrace the black lines of widescreen! They are your friends.

"Where is Yané! Don't tell me they dared to cut Yané out of the scene!" If you've already checked out the TPM viewing guide, you've already got an idea of how elusive Yané is in TPM. Well, if you are watching the P&S version of TPM "you can kiss Yané's best scenes goodbye!!!"

This is the third time I've re-vamped "the horrors" text. The above intro (all right, RANT) remains the same except for a link change. The following remains intact except for some word changes and the addition of "visual aids."

Horrors of Pan and Scan!!! v2.5

Here's where poor Yané ended up on the cutting room floor...

Yané doesn't act silly in this version of TPM...On the silver screen, Yané entered the "Qui chit-chats with Panaka and Sio" scene with a smile plastered over her face. In the P&S version Yané doesn't even enter the scene. Instead the camera pans and switches between the three main speakers: Qui, Sio, and Panaka.

What?! I could've swore she got to stand by OB1 in this film!... Yep, on the silver screen, Yané stood beside Obi-Wan during the "chit-chat." In the P&S version she doesn't get the pleasure.

Hey waitaminute! Wasn't Yané right behind Padmé?... This is perhaps the her unkindest cut. On the silver screen, a slightly blurry Yané stands just to the right of Padmé, when she utters the phrase "We are brave, your highness." In the P&S version, however, Yané is cut from the shot. Poor Yané.

The preceding are probably the most important cuts of Yané, but there are a few more ommissions that are of note:

Standmaiden(s) anyone??... It wasn't Candice Orwell in this scene, but it is possible that a standmaiden was supposed to be playing Yané. In that case, Ouch!, Yané is cut again, as the standmaiden is nowhere to be seen in the P&S version.

It was only a fleeting shot, but still... In the beginning of Qui's funeral, there is a brief shot of four handmaidens against the back wall. No such shot is in the P&S version. There are only brief and blurry shots of decapitated HMs as their heads never make it into the screen, only their cloaked bodies.

If despite all my warnings, you still find yourself watching the P&S version of TPM, there are still a few shots of Yané to be seen...Sadly, most of her face-shots in the "flame dress" are cut, but her blurry scene in the throne room is intact (She's the far HM on Amidala's right, sort of behind Panaka). Also, there is a decent shot of her in the Celebration Scene, again behind Panaka. She's the HM in the scene when Jar Jar yells "Yahoo!" It's a nice shot, not as blurry as the throne room scene.
